Books That Teach Kids About Gratitude

The month of November often inspires conversations about gratitude, giving back, and appreciation. It’s a time of thankfulness. And what better way to reflect on our own lives than through stories focused on the same theme. We’ve compiled a list of children’s books for you to add to your reading list, anytime of year! See if your local library has a few titles and cozy up with your littles to absorb the message. Follow it up with a discussion about your own feelings of gratitude.

The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan & Jan Berenstain: A big storm leaves the bear cubs feeling grateful they are safe and secure.

Gracias / Thanks by Pat Mora: A poetic take on the little, everyday things to be thankful for.

Thank You, Omu! By Oge Mora: A heartwarming story of sharing and community, with an extra serving of love.

Don’t Say a Word, Mama by Joe Hayes: Is it possible to be too generous? Two sisters give it a try in this gorgeous, bilingual story.

Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts: It can be hard to want something we can’t have—that is until we appreciate what already exists.

Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson: A celebration of family and friendship, even if everyone can’t contribute in the same way.

Grow Grateful by Sage Foster-Lasser: A fun adventure about cultivating gratitude by honoring different perspectives.

The Thankful Book by Todd Parr: Sometimes it’s the smallest, most unique things that inspire feelings of thankfulness and joy.

Splat Says Thank You! by Robb Scotton: A hilarious (and sweet) take on an unlikely friendship between a cat and mouse.

The Thank You Book by Mo Willems: Piggie wants to thank EVERYONE, but Gerald worries someone important might get overlooked.
